A Neutral Palette: A cozy family room

When I meet this beautiful family, I was so excited to work with them. I walked and talked with the wife who let me know that they wanted a neutral palette, but yet wanted the space to be warm and cozy. They also wanted me to design their entry way. I immediately got busy on their design plan keeping in mind what my client shared with me.

Painting

After viewing the home, I knew that we had to paint the fireplace and the wooden ceiling. I wanted the ceiling to just fade away and not breakup the eye. I also knew this room needed a focal point, so I decided to have the fireplace painted my favorite, Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black.

Furniture

My clients already had this nice, big sectional that was perfect for their space. Texture is important in any space, so I selected this walnut textured credenza and velvet green chair. I chose this jute rug because it is sturdy, has texture, and would warm up their floor nicely. It’s also good for their daughter to run and play on without fear of it being destroyed.

It took a minute for some of the furniture to come in and in some cases, we had to change the item. There were two items that came in damaged, so we had to wait on the vendor to send a new item out. Unfortunately, this is the world we currently live in.

The room is really large, so I wanted to create various moments in this space. I brought in a desk and textured chair to give the space dual duty. I also had their daughter in mind and them since we all are working from home in some type of capacity. Another moment was this floor length mirror that I styled with plants in front of it.

The last piece of furniture that was decided on was the black console table in the entry way. It, too, has textured drawers. I wanted to bring in another black element to the space to help ground the fireplace. I paired a black and cream runner to yet warm up the floor.

Styling

My favorite part of the design is pulling the entire room together. I want my clients to come home to a beautiful curated space that they will be happy to call their own. I brought in plants, candles holders, pillows, coffee table books, a lamp, and other accessories to bring this room to life. Of course, artwork and plants would be part of the design.

Let’s just say the response I got from my clients when they entered their home was priceless. I can’t wait to be invited back to help them design another space.
